TL;DR

Funding is a positioning signal, not a yield promise. The cash-and-carry trade is what compresses it.

Key takeaways

  • Read funding against the cash rate.
  • Check open interest before drawing a conclusion.
  • A sustained negative print is a positioning fact, not a forecast.

What funding actually prices

Perpetual funding is a balancing payment between longs and shorts. It exists to keep the perp near spot. When it goes negative, shorts pay longs — which sounds bullish until you notice who the shorts are.

The hedge that flattens the print

A cash-and-carry desk buys spot and sells the perpetual. That hedges price, and it also sells funding. When enough capital runs that trade, funding compresses toward the cash rate minus costs, and can print negative while spot demand is perfectly healthy.

Signal What it usually means What it can hide
Funding near zero Balanced positioning A large hedged basis trade
Funding deeply negative Shorts crowded Hedged spot longs, not bearish bets
Open interest rising, funding flat New hedged capital Directional conviction

The benchmark to use

Compare funding plus basis against what the same capital earns elsewhere. With tokenised Treasury products yielding around 3.60% (October 2026), a 2% annualised funding rate is not a trade — it is a worse version of a T-bill.

Frequently asked questions

Does negative funding mean the market is bearish?

Not necessarily. It means shorts are paying longs, which happens when hedged spot longs dominate the perp. Direction has to be read from spot and open interest.

Why compare with the cash rate?

Because a carry trade only works if the funding plus basis beats what the same capital earns in T-bills. With tokenised T-bills near 3.6%, the bar is not zero.
