A liquid staking token is a receipt for staked ETH, and the word liquid carries most of the argument. It does not remove the validator exit queue. It converts the queue into a secondary-market price, set by whoever will take the other side of your exit. Depeg models usually test that price against redemption value, which is the comparison that tells you least.
What you hold, and what you can do with it
Two routes exist for getting the ETH back. Redeem through the issuer or protocol, which places you in the validator exit queue and pays at the protocol conversion rate. Or sell the token, which pays immediately at whatever the book shows.
The first route has a known rate and an unknown date. The second has a known date and an unknown rate. A peg assumes the two price the same thing at the same moment, and they do not. The gap between them is the risk.
The queue is the real term sheet
Ethereum’s exit queue held 850,000 ETH in October 2026, a wait of about 14.8 days. Three months earlier the mechanism ran the other way: on 22 July 2026 the entry queue held roughly 2.5 million ETH, a wait of more than 43 days.
The queue is not a constant. It is a function of how many holders want the same exit at once, so it lengthens when confidence is weakest, and any model fixing the redemption delay has modelled the calm case. Total stake stood at 43.8 million ETH on 23 October 2026, which puts the October queue near 2% of all staked ETH.
The fee line, and a number that does not reconcile
The gross ETH staking rate in Q3 2026 was 2.63%, within a full-year range of 2.6% to 3.3%.
Lido charges 10% of rewards. The board carries the net near 2.75%, which sits above the gross printed next to it. That only reconciles if the net was computed on a gross nearer the top of the band: 10% of about 3.06% leaves about 2.75%. Apply the same 10% to a 2.63% gross and the result is 2.37%.
Read gross and fee on the same page before comparing wrappers. Centralised staking repeats the pattern: Coinbase charges about 35%, leaving 1.95% to 2.1%, Binance about 39.95%, leaving roughly 2.1%, and Kraken 10% to 26% by tier.
More than 96% of ETH staking rewards came from new issuance rather than fees, per Bitwise’s Q4 2026 figures, so the yield is a dilution claim (staking yield is not income).
The discount arrives when the queue is longest
The secondary-market price is not a valuation of ETH. It is the price of skipping the queue.
In calm conditions the queue is short, so skipping it is worth almost nothing and the token trades near redemption value. In stress the queue is long, skipping becomes valuable, and pricing it means a seller accepting a discount against a buyer who must hold through the same queue. A discount is a fee for immediacy, and the fee rises when immediacy is what you want.
Book depth thins at the same moment, because makers are warehousing the same duration mismatch. The token also travels into lending markets, where the discount becomes a health factor, marked down in the same week the borrow rate resets (how utilisation sets lending rates).
A peg that is a spread
A liquid staking token has no peg. It has a spread between two exits.
| Exit route | Time to ETH | Price certainty | Fails when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redeem through protocol | About 14.8 days at October 2026 queue depth | High, set by conversion rate | The queue lengthens further |
| Sell on the secondary market | Immediate | Low, set by the book | Depth thins and the discount widens |
| Hold the token | Indefinite | Marked to redemption | Never, but you stay exposed |
| Run a validator | Queue plus setup | High | Needs 32 ETH and operations |
A depeg model built on redemption value reads one row and ignores the other three, and the row that matters in a drawdown is the second.
What to do next
Size the position on the exit you would use in a drawdown, not the one on the product page. If your plan is to sell, check book depth at your size and treat the stressed-week discount as a cost, not a dislocation to capture. Before comparing two wrappers on yield, restate both nets from the same gross with the fee applied in front of you. The gap between 2.75% and 2.37% is small, and it decides which wrapper an allocator picks.
Verdict
A liquid staking token trades withdrawal timing for market pricing. In October 2026 that timing was about 14.8 days on an 850,000 ETH queue, and the market price is the only one that moves before the queue clears.
Treat the token as a claim with two exits and price the worse one. The peg is not a fact about the asset. It is a spread, and it widens when you need it narrow.
