TL;DR

Coverage ratio, timestamp and scope. A snapshot without a date is a marketing asset, not a control.

Key takeaways

  • Read the scope note before the ratio.
  • Compare the timestamp to a block you know.
  • Treat a partial attestation as partial.

Proof-of-reserves reports: the three numbers that actually matter

Read it in five minutes

Start at the back, not the front. The scope note tells you which entities, which chains and which wallet addresses are covered — and, more importantly, which are not.

The three numbers

Coverage ratio. Assets over liabilities. Anything below 100% is a finding, not a rounding error.

Timestamp. A report is a photograph. Without a time and a block height, you cannot tell whether it was taken before or after the withdrawal you are worried about.

Scope. Entity list plus chain list. A report covering the spot business and omitting the lending arm is not a report on the group.

Question Where to look Red flag
Are liabilities covered? Summary ratio Ratio below 1.0
When was it taken? Date and block height No timestamp
What is included? Scope note Entity list missing

Frequently asked questions

Does 100% coverage mean my coins are safe?

No. It means reported liabilities are matched by reported assets at that moment. Custody, segregation and legal claim are separate questions.

Why is scope the most abused part?

Because a report can be accurate for one entity and silent about a related one that holds the same customer balances.
